Rabbits cannot sweat like people and may struggle at around 24°C. Do not wait for a higher temperature threshold before providing active cooling. Check outdoor housing during the hottest afternoon hours because morning shade may move away.
Offer choice
Provide permanent shade, airflow, cool tiles and frozen water bottles wrapped in cloth. Supply more than one water source and check bottles work. The rabbit must always be able to move away from cooling objects.
Know the emergency signs
Rapid breathing, red hot ears, weakness, drooling, wobbling or open-mouth breathing require urgent action. Move the rabbit to a cooler place, dampen ears gently with lukewarm—not ice-cold—water and call a vet immediately. Do not immerse the rabbit in cold water.
