A good first reptile is not simply small or cheap. It is a species whose adult size, diet, climate needs, lifespan and temperament you can manage consistently. Reptiles depend entirely on the environment you create.
Research the adult animal
Check adult size, enclosure size, heating, UVB, humidity, diet and lifespan. Some small reptiles need very precise care, while some calm larger species are easier to manage if you have space.
Choose captive-bred where possible
Captive-bred animals are usually healthier, better adapted to captivity and less damaging to wild populations. Ask for feeding history, age, sex if known and any health issues. Avoid impulse purchases at fairs or shops.
Prepare the terrarium first
The enclosure should be running and stable before the animal arrives. Measure temperatures and humidity, test lighting and arrange the correct food. Start with terrarium basics before choosing the animal.
