CITES regulates international trade in protected species. In the reptile hobby, it affects many tortoises and some snakes and lizards. The rules are there to protect wild populations and make legal origin traceable.
Why documents matter
For protected species, the animal may need specific papers, certificates or proof of captive breeding. The required documents depend on the species and legal category. A seller should know exactly what belongs with the animal.
Buyer checks
Ask for the scientific name, origin, captive-bred status and documents before purchase. Make sure numbers, microchips or photos match where required. Do not accept "papers will follow" for an animal that legally needs them now.
Keep records
Store documents safely and pass them on if you sell or transfer the animal. If you are unsure, check official CITES information or ask a specialist before buying. Guessing can lead to legal and welfare problems.
