Spiders for sale in the Netherlands

Very different web-building and hunting spiders are offered as terrarium animals. Venom, speed, climbing ability, lifespan and climate vary greatly. “Spider” without a scientific name is not a safe basis for acquisition.

Spiders: behaviour and suitability

Web spiders need fixed anchor points while hunting species use cover and hunting room. Co-housing leads to predation or cannibalism in most species. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.

Care and housing

Match height, substrate, anchor points, humidity and ventilation exactly and feed safe suitable prey. Use a catch container during maintenance and do not unnecessarily touch animal or web. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.

Health and responsible acquisition

Ask for scientific name, life stage, origin and medical risk of a bite. Check all legs and normal moulting and do not buy a dangerous species without robust emergency and escape plans. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
