Beetles for sale in the Netherlands

Rhinoceros, flower and burying beetles are among the species kept in terraria. Larvae and adult beetles often need completely different food, substrate depth and humidity, so the full life cycle must be known before acquisition.

Beetles: behaviour and suitability

Adult beetles climb, burrow or fly depending on species, while larvae often live hidden in substrate for months. Housing males together may cause injury in horned species. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.

Care and housing

Use sufficiently deep clean species-appropriate substrate and measure temperature and humidity without losing ventilation. Give larvae the correct decayed wood or leaf litter and adults suitable fruit, nectar or prey. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.

Health and responsible acquisition

Ask for scientific name, captive generation, life stage and substrate used. Check for mites and damaged legs or wing cases and prevent import or possession of protected or invasive species. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
