- Buy at least two guinea pigs, or one that fits your existing group: guinea pigs should not live alone.
- Have the sex checked; two sows, or a neutered boar with sows, usually works.
- Look at the parents and the enclosure: clear eyes, a clean coat and active animals are good signs.
- Ask for the date of birth; young guinea pigs only leave once they eat on their own.
- Provide fresh vegetables every day: guinea pigs cannot make vitamin C themselves.
- Ask whether it is a long-haired breed; those need regular brushing.

A guinea pig without a pedigree often costs a few dozen euros, a pedigree guinea pig from a breeder more. On top of that, budget for a spacious enclosure, hay and fresh vegetables every day.
Can guinea pigs live with rabbits?
That is not recommended: they have different diets and needs, and a rabbit can injure a guinea pig by accident.

Guinea pigs: behaviour and suitability
Guinea pigs communicate through many sounds and graze almost continually. Rabbits do not replace guinea pigs. The species differ in communication, diet and physical strength. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.
Care and housing
Provide unlimited clean hay, daily vitamin-C-rich vegetables and complete guinea pig food, plus multiple feeding points and tunnels with two exits. Wheels and exercise balls harm the back and do not belong in housing. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.
Health and responsible acquisition
Weigh weekly and check cheek teeth, incisors, feet, skin, urine and appetite. Guinea pigs hide illness. Stopping eating or producing smaller droppings is a same-day emergency for a knowledgeable veterinarian. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
