Leopard geckos: behaviour and suitability
Leopard geckos hunt low to the ground and retreat into tight hides. Co-housing often causes silent dominance, food deprivation or tail loss and offers no necessary social benefit. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.
Care and housing
Provide several hides, safely secured stones, a humid hide, UVB and a thermal gradient of about 25–35 °C. Feed varied gut-loaded insects and supplement correctly with calcium and vitamins. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.
Health and responsible acquisition
Check toes for retained shed, eyes, jaw, tail, skin and droppings and ask about captive origin and colour form. Watch for bent legs, weakness, poor shedding and diarrhoea and consult a reptile veterinarian if present. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
