Bearded dragons: behaviour and suitability

Bearded dragons bask, dig and communicate with head bobbing, waving and beard colour. Co-housing often causes silent dominance in which one animal misses heat and food. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.

Care and housing

Provide a heat and UVB gradient, safe substrate, robust basking and climbing structures and sufficient hides. Feed a controlled combination of varied feeder animals and vegetables and supplement correctly with calcium and vitamins. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.

Health and responsible acquisition

Check jaw, spine, toes, weight, skin and droppings and ask about the UVB lamp, supplements and feeding pattern. Account for normal winter rest, but have lethargy or loss of appetite assessed by a reptile veterinarian when in doubt. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
