Horses are expensive even when nothing goes wrong. The purchase price may feel large, but monthly and annual costs are what determine whether ownership is sustainable.
Monthly basics
Livery or stable rent, feed, bedding, turnout, lessons and insurance can add up quickly. Costs vary widely by region and management type. Full-service livery is easier but more expensive; DIY livery needs time and reliability.
Regular care
Farrier visits, vaccinations, dental care, worm control, saddle checks and physiotherapy or bodywork where needed are recurring costs. A horse that needs special shoeing, medication or extra feed can change the budget significantly.
Unexpected costs
Emergency veterinary care, diagnostics, transport, replacement tack, rugs and rehabilitation can be substantial. Build a buffer before buying. If the monthly cost already feels tight, the first setback will be a serious problem.
