Setting Up an Aviary or Bird Cage: From Perches to Bathing

A good bird enclosure is designed around movement, safety and behaviour. A tall narrow cage may look impressive, but many birds need horizontal flight space more than height. The layout should encourage activity without overcrowding.

Perches and movement

Use natural perches of different safe diameters rather than only smooth dowels. Place perches so droppings do not fall into food and so the bird can move, stretch and fly short distances. Avoid filling every gap with toys.

Food, water and bathing

Keep bowls clean and positioned away from droppings. Many birds benefit from bathing options, whether a bath, misting or shallow water depending on species. Hygiene is essential because damp seed and dirty water spoil quickly.

Safety

Check bar spacing, sharp edges, toxic materials, unsafe rope, fumes and access by cats or dogs. For aviaries, add shelter from wind, rain, heat and predators. The best enclosure is easy to clean and lets birds behave like birds.
