Leg Rings and CITES for Birds: What Is Required and What Does It Prove?

For many bird species, identification and origin matter. A closed leg ring is placed when the bird is young and can help prove captive breeding. For protected species, CITES rules may also apply.

Closed rings

A closed ring usually cannot be added to an adult bird without damage, which is why it supports the claim that the bird was bred in captivity. Check that the ring is present, readable and appropriate for the species.

CITES documents

Some species need documentation for legal trade and ownership. Requirements depend on the species and legal status. Ask for the scientific name and check which documents should come with the bird before buying.

Keep paperwork safe

Documents and ring details should stay with the bird. If a seller dismisses paperwork as unimportant for a protected species, do not proceed until you have verified the rules.
