A pond can be a beautiful habitat, but fish choice must match the pond. Species differ in adult size, oxygen needs, temperature tolerance and how much waste they produce. Stocking too many fish is a common mistake.
Depth and winter
In colder climates, ponds need enough depth and stable conditions for fish to overwinter safely. Shallow ponds heat and cool quickly, which stresses fish. Keep part of the surface open for gas exchange in winter.
Filtration and oxygen
Koi and larger goldfish produce substantial waste and need good filtration. Plants help but do not replace proper planning. Warm weather lowers oxygen levels, so watch fish behaviour during heat.
Choose compatible species
Do not mix fish only because they look nice. Check adult size, group needs and whether your pond can support them long term. Quarantine new fish where possible to reduce disease risk.
