Goldfish are often treated as simple bowl pets, but they are active fish that produce a lot of waste and can grow large. Their hardiness is the reason they survive poor care, not proof that poor care is acceptable.
Space and filtration
A bowl is too small and unstable. Goldfish need a spacious aquarium or suitable pond with strong filtration and good oxygen levels. Water quality must be tested and maintained, because waste builds up quickly.
Social and long-lived
Goldfish are social and can live for many years with proper care. They should be kept with compatible goldfish, not tropical fish with different temperature needs. Fancy varieties may need different management from common goldfish.
Before buying
Research adult size, tank size, filter capacity and long-term care. If you cannot provide the space, choose a smaller species that fits your aquarium rather than forcing goldfish into unsuitable housing.
