Laminitis damages the sensitive structures that connect the hoof wall and pedal bone. Early treatment can limit permanent harm. A short, careful gait, reluctance to turn, shifting weight, lying down more, warm feet or strong digital pulses can be warning signs.
Call the vet immediately
Do not force a painful horse to walk. Restrict movement on a deep, supportive surface and follow veterinary instructions. Pain relief, imaging, diet and hoof support should be coordinated with the vet and farrier.
Individual grazing
Ponies, easy keepers and animals with obesity, EMS, PPID or previous laminitis often need a tailored plan. Introduce grass gradually and monitor body condition and crest. Restricted grazing must still provide suitable forage, movement and social contact.
