Buying a Guinea Pig: What to Check Before You Choose

Guinea pigs are friendly and talkative, but they are not low-maintenance starter pets. They need company of their own kind, enough floor space, daily fresh vegetables and a reliable source of vitamin C.

Never keep one alone

Guinea pigs are social animals. A compatible pair or small group is usually much better than a single animal. Make sure sexes are correctly identified, because accidental litters are common and risky.

Health checks

A healthy guinea pig is alert, moves well, has clear eyes, a clean nose, clean rear end and a good coat. Avoid animals with crusty eyes, sneezing, bald patches, wounds, diarrhoea or noisy breathing. Ask about age, diet and whether the animal is used to handling.

Housing and food

Most shop cages are too small. Guinea pigs need a spacious enclosure, hiding places, hay at all times, pellets with vitamin C and fresh vegetables. They are prey animals, so calm handling and predictable routines matter.
