Rodent Housing: Why the Shop Cage Is Often Too Small

Rodents are often sold with cages that are convenient for shops, not ideal for animals. Good housing starts with species-specific behaviour: digging, running, climbing, hiding, gnawing or living in groups.

Match the enclosure to the species

Hamsters need deep bedding and a large, safe wheel. Guinea pigs need floor space and companions. Rats need climbing, levels, hammocks and social housing. Gerbils need deep substrate for tunnels. One cage type cannot suit them all.

Think in behaviour, not decoration

Every enclosure should allow natural movement, hiding, foraging and chewing. Plastic toys and tiny houses are less important than space, ventilation, safe bedding and enrichment that can be used properly.

Cleaning and health

Poor ventilation, damp bedding and ammonia smell can cause health problems. Clean regularly without removing every familiar scent at once. When buying an animal, ask what housing it is used to and plan an upgrade before bringing it home.
