Ojos Azules for sale in the Netherlands

Historical status

Ojos Azules means “blue eyes” and described an experimental United States line in which blue or odd eyes occurred without white coat or colourpoint. It never developed into a normal broad current breed population. Older TICA material now lists the name as domestic shorthair or longhair rather than a recognised breed. A dark-coated blue-eyed cat is therefore not automatically an Ojos Azules.

Genetic concerns

Serious problems were reported in homozygous offspring in the original program, including skull and tail abnormalities and stillbirth. Modern research shows that several genetically different dominant-blue-eye lines exist, so findings from one line cannot be assigned to every blue-eyed cat. That uncertainty makes selection or mating without an identified variant and expert guidance irresponsible.

Responsible choice

Do not buy a kitten marketed through the historical name and rare eye colour without verifiable registration and genetic evidence. Have hearing, eyes, skull and general function assessed independently, but testing cannot repair the absence of a sustainable breeding program. Choose a healthy non-pedigree or established breed cat for behaviour and welfare. Deep-blue eyes alone offer no breed proof or health advantage.
