Budgerigars for sale in the Netherlands
The budgerigar is a small Australian parakeet that needs intensive daily contact with conspecifics, flight room and occupation. Solitary keeping or permanent confinement in a small cage does not suit its social active nature.

Budgerigars: behaviour and suitability
Budgerigars preen, call and rest together and form durable social bonds. Human contact does not replace a conspecific. A socially deprived bird may become apathetic or develop abnormal behaviour. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.
Care and housing
Choose a wide rather than tall cage, natural perches of varied diameter, a safe daily flight area and chewing and foraging material. Feed a varied diet, not only a fatty seed mix. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.
Health and responsible acquisition
Check cere, breathing, droppings, feet and breast muscles and weigh regularly. Do not buy an unweaned juvenile and ask about age, ring, diet and housing with conspecifics. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
