Many people have strong opinions about male and female cats. Some say males are more affectionate and females more independent. There can be tendencies, but individual personality, neutering, socialisation and home environment usually matter far more than sex alone.
Before neutering
Unneutered males may roam, spray and fight. Unneutered females come into heat and can become pregnant quickly. If you do not plan responsible breeding, neutering is usually an important welfare and management choice. Discuss timing with your vet.
After neutering
Once neutered, differences often become smaller. A calm, well-socialised male can be easygoing; a confident female can be highly affectionate. Look at how the kitten or cat behaves, how it was raised and whether it suits your household.
Choosing from a litter
Ask the breeder or owner to describe each kitten honestly. The boldest kitten is not always the easiest and the quietest may simply need patience. For a wider checklist, read buying a kitten.
