FIV and FeLV are two important viral infections in cats. FIV is often called feline AIDS, while FeLV is feline leukaemia virus. The names can sound frightening, but the practical meaning depends on the test, the cat, the living situation and veterinary advice.
Why testing matters
Responsible catteries test breeding cats to reduce the risk of spreading infection. Buyers should ask whether the parents or cattery cats are tested and what the result means. A vague answer is not enough when kittens are being sold as healthy and responsibly bred.
What a positive result means
A positive test does not always tell the whole story without confirmation and veterinary interpretation. Some cats can live for years with careful management, but they may need an indoor-only life, separation from negative cats or extra monitoring.
Buyer questions
Ask for clear test information, vaccination records and honest disclosure about illness in the household. If you are adopting or rehoming an adult cat, discuss FIV and FeLV status with a vet, especially if you already have cats at home.
