Tetras: behaviour and suitability

A larger shoal reduces shyness, stress and aggression in many species. Not every tetra is calm: some active species quarrel or nip fins, while a few predatory characins do not live in an ordinary shoal. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.

Care and housing

Usually keep shoaling species in groups of at least ten and provide open swimming room, plants for cover, subdued light and a closed lid. Match tank length and water values to the exact species. About 24 °C and soft to moderately hard water suit many, but not all species. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.

Health and responsible acquisition

Choose active, non-thin fish with clean skin that swim with the shoal and feed normally. Dull skin, clamped or ragged fins, persistent paleness and slow or crooked swimming are warning signs. White spot, fin rot and neon tetra disease in some tetras occur. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
