Swordtails for sale in the Netherlands

Swordtails are active Central American livebearers. Adult males carry the characteristic extended tail fin. They need more swimming length than platies and a considered group composition to limit persistent pursuit.

Swordtails: behaviour and suitability

Males establish rank and pursue females. A short tank or poor sex ratio increases stress. Females may produce several broods from stored sperm. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.

Care and housing

Use a covered aquarium at least 80 cm long with open swimming space, filtration and plants for shelter. Maintain about 24 °C, pH 7–8 and hardness 10–20 dH, with one male per at least three females. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.

Health and responsible acquisition

Choose active fish with clean skin that are not thin. Dull skin, clamped fins, abnormal body shape and rocking or crooked swimming are warning signs. White spot, velvet and fin rot occur. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
