Shubunkins for sale in the Netherlands

The shubunkin is a single-tailed calico goldfish with the same powerful build and space needs as a common goldfish. It grows large, often lives for decades and suits a spacious deep pond better than a household aquarium.

Shubunkins: behaviour and suitability

Shubunkins swim quickly and forage together over substrate and plants. They combine better with other single-tailed goldfish than with slow, extremely built fancy goldfish. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.

Care and housing

Use an aquarium at least 1 metre long with filtration and non-sharp substrate, or a pond with an area at least 1 metre deep. Prefer 10–21 °C, avoid rapid temperature changes and measure water quality. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.

Health and responsible acquisition

Choose active fish with clean skin that are not thin. Dull skin, clamped fins, abnormal body shape or crooked swimming are warning signs. White spot, velvet, fish lice and fin rot occur. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
