Aquarium “sharks” (trade name): behaviour and suitability

A red-tail black shark defends bottom territory while a bala shark grows large and needs a shoal plus much swimming length. Their shared outline says nothing about compatibility. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.

Care and housing

Buy only by scientific name and size the tank for adult dimensions and social needs. True marine sharks do not belong in a normal home aquarium. Even small specimens need specialist very large systems. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.

Health and responsible acquisition

Avoid animals with collision-damaged snouts or hollow bellies. Ask explicitly about adult size, group size and origin. An attractive juvenile is often almost impossible to rehome later. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
