Rainbowfish: behaviour and suitability

Males display to one another and may defend a small territory during breeding. Larger, busier species can disturb slow fish. Small calm species do better in a species tank or with calm tank mates. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.

Care and housing

Keep at least six to eight fish, preferably more, and match swimming length to the exact species: 60 cm may be the minimum for small blue-eyes, while LICG advises at least 150 cm for the largest species. Also check temperature, hardness and population origin by species. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.

Health and responsible acquisition

Choose fish that swim with the shoal, feed normally and have no dull skin, clamped fins or abnormal swimming. Pale colour, gasping and isolation are warning signs. Velvet and fish tuberculosis occur relatively often in this group. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
