Plecos and suckermouth catfish: behaviour and suitability

Hypostomus plecostomus defends a territory and often becomes more aggressive towards conspecifics with age. Check the scientific name or L-number of every “pleco”, because the trade label is also used for other species. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.

Care and housing

Use an aquarium about 2 metres long with powerful filtration, shelters among rocks or wood and water at 21–28 °C with pH 6–7. In addition to algae, deliberately feed plant and animal foods and account for the large waste output. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.

Health and responsible acquisition

Choose an active fish with clean skin that is not thin. Dull skin, clamped fins, abnormal body shape and rocking or crooked swimming are warning signs. Also mind the sharp dorsal spine during transport. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
