Platies: behaviour and suitability

A group with more females than males distributes attention, but females may keep producing young for months. Dense cover increases fry survival and therefore the risk of overcrowding. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.

Care and housing

Use an aquarium at least 50–60 cm long with filtration, aeration, plants and water at 20–26 °C. About 24 °C is favourable. Maintain pH 7–8 and hardness 10–25 dH, with one male per two to four females. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.

Health and responsible acquisition

Choose active fish with clean skin that are not thin. Dull skin, clamped fins, abnormal body shape or rocking and crooked swimming are warning signs. White spot, velvet and fin rot occur. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
