Mixed / Crossbreed for sale in the Netherlands

“Mixed fish” is not a biological species and gives too little information for suitable care. Have every fish identified before acquisition. Only then can water values, social needs, adult size and diet be established responsibly.

Unidentified or mixed fish: behaviour and suitability

A mixed tank can work only when the behaviour of every species is known. Similar shop size does not mean fish remain equally sized or share dietary and territorial needs. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.

Care and housing

Record scientific names and compare temperature, hardness, salinity, adult size, swimming layer and group size. Do not buy an anonymous mixed lot or add fish merely to fill “empty space”. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.

Health and responsible acquisition

A seller should identify every offered animal and explain its care. Postpone acquisition when uncertain and ask an experienced aquarist or veterinarian for identification. Treatment is also risky without species knowledge. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
