Golden Orfes for sale in the Netherlands

The golden orfe is a golden form of the ide, a fast European shoaling fish for large garden ponds. It swims much at the surface, jumps well and becomes too large and active for an ordinary aquarium.

Golden orfes: behaviour and suitability

Golden orfes rely on a shoal and make long fast swimming circuits. They jump when startled or chasing insects and are therefore unsuitable for small, shallow or fully overgrown ponds. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.

Care and housing

Provide ample open swimming space, at least about 80–100 cm depth and strong oxygenation in warm weather. Protect the pond where herons or jumping pose a risk and avoid overcrowding. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.

Health and responsible acquisition

Choose fish with intact scales, a straight back and active shoaling. Quarantine new pond fish and check for skin and gill parasites. Never release them into public waters. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
