Discus for sale in the Netherlands

Discus are large disc-shaped Amazon cichlids for experienced keepers. They need a warm group, much water, exceptionally stable quality and calm tank mates. Dark colour and isolation are often early stress signs.

Discus: behaviour and suitability

The group forms a hierarchy and a pair may temporarily claim a breeding territory. An undersized group concentrates aggression on the lowest fish, which may darken and miss food. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.

Care and housing

Keep water stable at 28–30 °C and match pH and hardness to wild or captive origin and the source water. Use a sound biological filter, measure ammonia, nitrite and nitrate and feed several small portions without leftovers. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.

Health and responsible acquisition

Check for darkening, dull or damaged skin, clamped fins and abnormal swimming. White faeces, weight loss and poor appetite may fit intestinal flagellates. Ask about source water and quarantine. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
