Danios for sale in the Netherlands

Danios are fast, slender shoaling fish from South and Southeast Asia. Familiar zebra danios tolerate cooler water than many tropical tank mates and chiefly need swimming length, flow and a substantial shoal.

Danios: behaviour and suitability

A substantial shoal distributes chasing and shows synchronised swimming. In a short tank danios may continually disturb slower fish and readily jump through openings. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.

Care and housing

Keep at least eight conspecifics in a covered planted aquarium with ample open swimming room and sand substrate. For many species the ideal temperature is 21–26 °C, but check size and water values for the exact species. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.

Health and responsible acquisition

Choose active fish with clean skin that are not thin. Dull skin, clamped fins, deformity or weight loss are warning signs. Zebra danios can develop Pseudoloma infections as well as white spot and velvet. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
