Cyprinids for sale in the Netherlands
Cyprinids form a very large freshwater family containing miniature rasboras, active barbs, goldfish and metre-long carp. Without a scientific name the group label therefore says nothing definitive about size or housing.

Cyprinids: behaviour and suitability
Many small species live in shoals, while large carp need the space and seasonal dynamics of a pond. Foraging at substrate or surface differs and can affect plants and furnishing. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.
Care and housing
Do not use the family as care advice: identify the species and determine swimming length, group size, winter temperature and diet. A juvenile cyprinid may become dozens of times heavier than in the sales tank. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.
Health and responsible acquisition
Ask for scientific name and origin and inspect fins, scales, breathing and posture. Never release into natural water. Escaped cyprinids can damage ecosystems and spread disease. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
