Catfish for sale in the Netherlands

Catfish form an enormous freshwater group, from small armoured catfish to predators over a metre long. The trade name “catfish” is therefore insufficient to determine adult size, diet, spines and aquarium suitability.

Catfish: behaviour and suitability

Barbels are sensitive organs and some species have sharp or venomous fin spines. Nocturnal activity, territoriality and predation on smaller fish are often underestimated in juvenile sale specimens. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.

Care and housing

Use substrate that does not damage barbels, provide suitable caves or wood and feed deliberately rather than relying on scraps. Large species produce much waste and demand powerful filtration and exceptional water volume. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.

Health and responsible acquisition

Always ask for scientific name and adult size and check how spines can be transported safely. Avoid thin fish with hollow bellies, worn barbels or reddened skin around mouth and abdomen. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
