Butterfly Fish for sale in the Netherlands

Butterflyfish are laterally compressed marine fish in the family Chaetodontidae. Many need specialist diets and pick at coral polyps, so they belong only in a large, stable marine aquarium after careful species selection.

Butterflyfish: behaviour and suitability

Some butterflyfish live as established pairs while others tolerate no conspecific. Many constantly inspect rock and coral with a narrow mouth and are unsuitable for reef tanks containing valuable corals. Always assess the actual animal and, when a trade label covers several species, verify the scientific name before acquisition. Age, sex, health and previous housing can noticeably influence behaviour.

Care and housing

Provide stable salinity, strong filtration, ample swimming space and rockwork without sharp trapping points. Before purchase, confirm the species accepts prepared food. Obligate coral feeders are not a responsible beginner choice. Set up the complete enclosure before the animal arrives and record relevant values and daily behaviour. A sudden change in appetite, activity, breathing, posture or droppings calls for a check of the environment and, where needed, knowledgeable help.

Health and responsible acquisition

Buy only a fish that swims actively, breathes normally and is seen eating. Ask for exact species, capture method and quarantine duration. Hollow flanks and a damaged snout often predict feeding problems. Ask the seller about age, origin, current care and known health problems, and ensure any documents belong to the animal offered. Never choose on colour, size or price alone, and identify a knowledgeable veterinarian or other species expert before urgent problems arise.
