Temperament and training

Yorkshire Terriers were once used for vermin control and retain bold terrier behaviour in a very small body. They are curious, alert and often closely bonded to their people. Without guidance they may bark, guard or challenge much larger dogs. Socialise them safely on the ground as well as in arms, teach calm greetings and reward quiet behaviour. Children must understand how easily a dog of only a few kilograms can be injured by rough lifting or a fall.

Grooming and exercise

The long hair tangles without daily combing, so many owners maintain a practical shorter clip. Check eyes and ears and establish tooth brushing from puppyhood because small jaws are highly prone to dental crowding and tartar. Yorkies need real walks and sniffing rather than life in a carrier. Limit uncontrolled jumping from furniture, use a secure lightweight harness and protect against cold. Lean body condition supports knees and breathing.

Health and choosing a breeder

Patellar luxation, dental disease, tracheal collapse and portosystemic liver shunt occur in the breed. In the Netherlands, ask for official patella results and the veterinary liver declaration or PetScan used for pedigree issuance. Extremely small “teacup” Yorkies are not a recognised variety and face extra risks from fractures, low blood sugar and organ disease. Choose a breeder selecting for functional size and openly discussing liver or airway problems. See the mother, inspect the rearing environment and reject premiums based on tiny size or non-standard colour.
