Temperament and training
Whippets combine remarkable speed outdoors with a strong preference for soft beds and quiet company at home. Most are friendly, unobtrusive and sensitive to their handler. Calm reward-based training protects trust better than raised voices or physical correction. Sudden movement can trigger instinctive pursuit, so socialisation cannot replace safe management. Many live comfortably with other dogs. Compatibility with cats depends on the individual and carefully managed early experience.
Exercise and care
The fine coat is simple to brush but offers little protection from cold rain or rough ground. A well-fitted coat is often practical in winter. Provide daily walks and regular opportunities to sprint on a fully enclosed field. A few fast runs differ from forced long-distance work. Check thin skin for cuts, maintain short nails for stable footing and teach relaxed time alone. Warm bedding is a basic need for a lean dog with minimal insulation.
Health and choosing a breeder
Whippets are generally relatively healthy, but the Dutch breeding rules require a current ECVO eye examination and Doppler cardiac ultrasound by a veterinary specialist. Ask for the original results and discuss epilepsy and longevity among close relatives. A normal snapshot cannot exclude later disease. A Whippet should be lean but well muscled, not weak or emaciated. Choose free movement, an open temperament and transparent records over rare-colour advertising, and make sure the breeder understands the needs of pet, sport and racing homes.
