Temperament and training

Beneath the familiar outline is a genuine cattle dog: quick, bold and prepared to control movement with voice or heel nipping. Pembrokes learn rapidly and enjoy participation, but may chase, bark or attempt to herd children without suitable outlets. Early socialisation and reward-based recall, impulse control and settling skills are important. With varied training they become versatile companions that often remain strongly engaged with family life.

Exercise and care

The weather-resistant coat needs weekly brushing and much more during shedding. Despite short legs, a fit Corgi requires substantial daily walking, sniffing and learning. Keep body weight lean because every extra kilogram increases load on back and joints. Limit repeated stairs and high jumps, particularly for puppies, while using controlled movement to build muscle. Tracking, obedience and carefully adapted sports can suit the breed when impact and fatigue are managed thoughtfully.

Health and choosing a breeder

Hip dysplasia, inherited eye disease and degenerative myelopathy form the core of Dutch screening. Ask for official hip results, an annual ECVO eye examination and both parents' DM DNA status. Von Willebrand or other tests can be relevant to a particular line. A DNA carrier is not necessarily affected, but pairings require responsible planning. Avoid exaggerated length, weight or very low bodies and favour easy, balanced movement. Family history, temperament and welfare matter more than fashionable colour or tail presentation.
