Gundog and companion

Weimaraners were bred for versatile work in field, forest and water. They attach closely to handlers and can develop distress without gradual solitude training. Young dogs need calm socialisation, clear boundaries and secure management around wildlife and small animals. Their strength, nose and persistence make casual training unrealistic. Reward-based structure and predictable rest produce the most reliable partnership.

Activity and body care

The short coat is simple, but inspect skin, ears, feet and ticks after outdoor work. Build condition slowly and do not run a growing dog beside a bicycle or over hard ground for long periods. Daily life needs extensive exercise, searching and retrieving or hunting practice. The deep chest creates a gastric torsion risk, so manage meals around intense work and learn the urgent warning signs.

Health and choosing a breeder

Ask for official hip and elbow results, a current ECVO eye examination and DNA status for line-relevant conditions such as HUU and hypomyelination. Dutch breed information also tracks conditions including SD, DM and PED. Discuss epilepsy, torsion, skin and thyroid disease and longevity among relatives. Dutch 2026 breeding policy particularly emphasises valid hip and ECVO results, so verify current original documents for both parents.
