Enormous working guardian

The Transmontano protects flocks from wolves and works independently across extensive land. It is not simply an extra-large family dog. Socialisation should build safe neutrality while respecting its work context. Physically manage visitors, dogs and property boundaries and train with calm rewards. Confrontation with this mass is unsafe.

Space, growth and daily management

Only a spacious rural workplace with exceptionally robust fencing is appropriate. Shared contact and control remain necessary alongside flock work. Keep the fast-growing dog lean, increase loads slowly and provide cool soft rest. Brush weekly and inspect feet, skin and ticks. Know the signs of gastric torsion.

Health and choosing a breeder

There is no Dutch breed club and FCI recognition is provisional. Request official hip, elbow and ECVO results and specialist cardiac assessment, plus family records on gastric torsion, joints and behaviour. Verify Portuguese ancestry, import papers and inbreeding. Choose functional mass and manageable recovery over maximum size or sharpness.
