A versatile working dog
Beneath the styled coat is an athletic water retriever. Standard Poodles learn quickly, work closely with people and may excel in scent work, obedience, retrieving or agility. They respond strongly to household atmosphere, so calm clarity is more effective than pressure. Balance physical activity with nose work and impulse control. Endless ball throwing mainly builds fitness and arousal. Practise solitude gradually and provide daily social connection.
Grooming, exercise and feeding
The growing coat must be combed to the skin several times weekly even when kept short, with regular professional clipping. Check ears, mouth and feet. Increase heavy exercise slowly while the dog develops. The deep chest brings a gastric torsion risk, so plan meals and intensive activity sensibly and learn emergency signs. Assess body condition by touch because the coat can hide gradual weight change.
Health and choosing a breeder
Ask for official hip and current ECVO eye results plus DNA findings relevant to the lines, including applicable PRA variants. Discuss sebaceous adenitis, Addison's disease, epilepsy, gastric torsion and longevity among relatives. Dutch club policy combines imaging, eye examination and DNA. One commercial panel is therefore insufficient. Choose breeders who follow older family members, pair carriers responsibly and value health and genetic diversity above show success.
