Small size, complete hound

The Niederlaufhund was bred lower for hunting on foot and retains voice, endurance and independence. It works socially but may choose a trail over recall. Use reward-based training, a long line and secure fencing. Daily scent work and substantial walks matter more than the compact height might suggest.

A functional low body

Keep the dog lean and muscular and manage stairs, jumping and long distances sensibly during growth. Normal free movement remains necessary. Inspect drop ears, nails, pads and back and care for the smooth or rough coat appropriately. Select useful ground clearance and straight weight-bearing feet rather than the lowest puppy.

Health and choosing a breeder

Dutch club rules require no screening. Ask for eye, patella and hip assessment and discuss back disease, epilepsy, ears and gastric torsion in the family. Verify the Swiss variety on the FCI pedigree, plus inbreeding and import records. Watch adult relatives move and choose longevity and social recovery over rarity or colour.
