Sled-dog temperament

Huskies were selected to travel long distances in a team while making independent decisions. Many are friendly with people and unsuitable as guard dogs, yet obedience is rarely their sole motivation. Use rewards, build recall without trusting it around wildlife and provide compatible canine company where appropriate. Their prey drive, digging, climbing and howling require realistic planning rather than punishment or the expectation that adulthood will remove those traits.

Coat, climate and activity

Brush the double coat weekly and daily during the major moult. Do not routinely shave it. Adults need substantial daily movement, ideally including controlled pulling sports, long-line exploration and scent work. A tall escape-resistant fence should also prevent digging underneath. Reduce work sharply in heat and humidity and always provide water and shade. Teach calm recovery as deliberately as endurance so that home life remains manageable.

Health and choosing a breeder

Hip dysplasia and inherited eye disease, including cataract, require targeted screening. The Dutch breed club requires an official hip assessment and ECVO eye examination for breeding dogs. Review original results for both parents and discuss seizures, thyroid or skin disease and longevity among relatives. A favourable result cannot exclude every condition. Select stable behaviour, genetic diversity and a working line whose activity level genuinely fits the future household.
