Temperament and training

Shih Tzus have a long history as companion dogs and usually want to live close to their people. They are playful, friendly and capable of learning, although charm can conceal a stubborn streak. Short reward-based sessions and consistent routines work well. Introduce calm handling, respectful children, visitors and brief time alone during puppyhood. This is not a breed for regular full working days without company, and small size should never excuse barking, fear or poor social skills.

Grooming, movement and heat

A full coat needs daily combing, washing and drying. A short pet trim reduces but does not eliminate maintenance. Clean the eye area, keep ears dry and brush teeth. Daily walks support weight and mobility, although prolonged intense exercise is unsuitable. The short muzzle can impair cooling, so use a harness, choose cool times and stop for noisy breathing, gagging or slow recovery. Snoring does not make awake respiratory effort normal.

Health and choosing a breeder

Eye injuries, patellar luxation, dental crowding and BOAS are significant risks. Dutch breeding dogs must meet the legal short-muzzle criteria for breathing, nostrils, muzzle ratio, nose fold, visible sclera and eyelid closure. Ask for the veterinary declaration, patella assessment and periodic eye examination focused on brachycephalic problems. A parent that required airway surgery may not be bred from. Visible muzzle length alone does not prove compliance. Avoid extreme flat faces and choose documented function and health above colour or miniature marketing.
