Headstrong livestock driver

The Serra de Aires works quickly and independently with livestock and guards property and family. It learns easily but may make its own decisions, so consistent reward-based rules are necessary. Socialise for calm visitor and dog contact and provide herding, tracking, obedience or varied sport daily. Deliberately teach settling too.

Coat and movement

Comb the long coat without undercoat to the skin at least weekly, particularly around armpits, beard, groin and feet. Keep hair clear of eyes and ears and choose a practical length when welfare requires it. Increase jumping and quick turns gradually and keep the medium-sized athlete lean.

Health and choosing a breeder

There is no recognised Dutch breed club. Request official hip, elbow and ECVO results and family records on epilepsy, thyroid disease, patellas and behaviour. Verify Portuguese FCI ancestry, import documents and inbreeding. Choose stable recovery, free movement and a functional coat over rarity or excessive guarding drive.
