Temperament and training

Samoyeds were developed to work and live alongside people in an Arctic environment. They are usually sociable and expressive, but also capable of independent choices when a scent or running opportunity appears. Reward-based recall, quiet behaviour and relaxed separation should begin early. Their friendliness does not guarantee effortless compatibility with every animal. Secure fencing and careful introductions remain important, while harsh correction often increases conflict or avoidance rather than cooperation.

Exercise and coat care

The double coat requires weekly grooming to the skin and daily attention during major shedding periods. Shaving damages its normal protective function and is rarely appropriate without a medical reason. Adults enjoy long walks, hiking, scent work and controlled pulling sports. Build workload gradually and avoid strenuous activity in warm weather. Provide shade, water and a cool resting place because the coat retains heat. Check ears, teeth, nails and dense areas of skin rather than assuming the white surface is clean.

Health and choosing a breeder

Hip dysplasia and inherited eye disease form the Dutch core screening: ask for the official hip result and a current ECVO eye examination for both parents. Kidney disease, diabetes and DNA-testable disorders occur in some lines, so family history and appropriate additional tests still matter. Responsible breeders explain how carrier status is managed without unnecessarily shrinking diversity. Choose parents that move freely and recover well after exercise. Avoid unusually tiny dogs, extreme coat volume or a purchase based only on a photogenic white puppy.
