Characteristics

Origin: Southern Africa, developed in present-day Zimbabwe
Height: 61 – 69 cm

Temperament and training

Ridgebacks combine attachment to their family with the independent decisions of a hunting hound. They may be reserved with strangers and are not expected to greet everyone enthusiastically. Socialisation should create confidence and calm neutrality, while reward-based recall, lead skills and impulse control need long-term practice. Adolescents can be physically powerful and selectively obedient. Secure management remains important around wildlife, livestock and unfamiliar dogs even when training has progressed well.

Exercise and daily care

A fit adult needs long daily walks, opportunities to run in safely enclosed areas and mental work such as tracking. Build duration gradually for puppies and avoid repetitive impact before maturity. The short coat is easy to brush but provides little cold-weather protection. A coat may be useful during inactive winter periods. Ridgebacks value comfortable indoor rest near their people. Maintain a lean waist, short nails and reliable car or gate routines, because speed and strength make small management failures consequential.

Health and choosing a breeder

Dermoid sinus is an important congenital risk and every puppy should be examined carefully. Elbow disease and lumbosacral stenosis are also prominent Dutch concerns. Ask for the hip and elbow results and the DNA test for juvenile myoclonic epilepsy required by the Dutch breed club, plus thyroid or other assessment when family history warrants it. Ridgeless puppies can be healthy companions. Avoid breeders who prioritise a perfect ridge over temperament, movement and welfare or hide epilepsy, cancer and longevity information.
