Companionship and training

Pugs are usually people-focused, playful companions that enjoy being included in household life. Reward-based training and gradual practice for time alone are important. Calm behaviour must not automatically be read as contentment: reluctance to move, waking suddenly, noisy breathing or slow recovery after light activity can indicate physical restriction. Children should handle the dog gently and every individual needs an undisturbed place to sleep.

Breathing, heat and daily care

Brush the short coat weekly and keep facial folds clean and dry without irritating them. Use a well-fitting harness, maintain a lean body condition and exercise only during cool periods in warm weather. Stop before respiratory distress and protect the dog around water because the compact body may make swimming difficult. Snoring, gagging, blue gums or laboured breathing while awake are not harmless breed quirks.

Health, Dutch law and purchase

BOAS, eye injury, fold dermatitis and spinal disease are major concerns. Dutch breeding dogs must meet legal criteria covering resting respiration, nostrils, muzzle ratio, nose fold, visible sclera and complete eyelid closure. Ask for the veterinary declarations of both parents and reject animals that required airway surgery to function. A pedigree or the label “retro pug” never replaces individual examination, original health records and a freely breathing functional muzzle.
