Portuguese Water Dogs swam, dived and carried equipment between boats and shore. They need cooperation, retrieving, scent work and exercise every day and may react territorially. Socialise early, train with rewards and teach calm visitor greetings and solitude. Introduce water work gradually and safely.

Coat and water safety

Comb the curly or wavy coat to the skin weekly and clip regularly in a practical style. The dog sheds little but is not guaranteed hypoallergenic. Rinse dirty water away, dry ears and skin and use a life jacket where appropriate. Inspect feet and allow a wet coat to dry completely.

Health and choosing a breeder

Request official hip and ECVO results and DNA status for prcd-PRA, GM1 gangliosidosis, juvenile dilated cardiomyopathy and microphthalmia with relevant eye abnormalities. Discuss Addison's disease, cancer and epilepsy in the family. Review original microchip-linked documents. A large DNA panel does not replace cardiac, eye and joint examinations.
