A small, serious dog

Pomeranians retain the alertness and confidence of larger Spitz breeds. They enjoy learning, exploring and announcing changes around the home. Reward calm responses and teach a quiet cue rather than excusing constant barking because of size. Carrying the dog everywhere can limit confidence and muscle development. Normal walking and carefully managed social contact remain essential. Young children must understand how easily a tiny dog can be injured.

Coat and physical care

Comb the double coat to the skin two or three times each week and more during shedding. Routine shaving can disrupt coat regrowth. Use safe steps where repeated high jumps would strain fine limbs, while still providing daily movement and problem solving. Dental care, nail checks and a harness instead of neck pressure help protect common weak points. Monitor weight beneath the large coat with hands and scales.

Health and purchase

Patellar luxation, tracheal collapse, alopecia X, open fontanel and painful Chiari-like malformation or syringomyelia occur. Dutch LICG guidance notes that extremely low weight increases neurological risk and advises MRI screening of breeding dogs for CM/SM at an appropriate age. Also ask for the required patella result and for cardiac or neurological problems among older relatives. Choose open airways, sturdy straight legs and a normal skull instead of “micro”, “tiny” or “teacup” size.
