The breed was developed in France and Germany as a highly intelligent small Poodle variety whose colour does not alter exercise, coat-care and health-screening needs. That original task still shapes drive, pace and independence. Expect the breed behaviour described here and do not choose on appearance alone. Build solitude, confidence and calm social contact in small steps and never treat small size as a reason for constant protection or carrying. Start socialisation, solitude and calm handling while young, using rewards and clear predictable boundaries. A stable dog can recover from new stimuli without continually barking, fleeing or threatening.

Exercise and daily care

Provide normal walks, sniffing and short training every day, maintain teeth consistently and prevent both excess weight and fragile inactivity. Coat care is: Dense curly or corded coat. Comb daily and clip every six to eight weeks. Also inspect ears, teeth, nails, skin and pads weekly. Keep the dog lean and increase running, jumping, cycling or heavy work gradually while growing. A garden does not replace shared exercise, mental work and rest. Teach an off-switch too, so extensive activity does not become chronic agitation.
